What to Expect: Nitrous Oxide ("Laughing Gas")

For some kids, a dental visit just needs a little extra help feeling calm. That's where nitrous oxide comes in. It's one of the gentlest tools we have, and it's often the first step for kids who get nervous but don't need anything more involved.

What It Is

Nitrous oxide (you probably know it as "laughing gas") is a mild, breathable gas that helps kids feel relaxed and at ease during their visit. It's mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask that sits over the nose.

Here's the important part: your child stays awake the whole time. Nitrous oxide isn't sedation in the sense of "going to sleep." It just takes the edge off, so a visit that might otherwise feel overwhelming feels manageable instead.

Who It's For

Nitrous oxide is a great fit for kids with mild to moderate dental anxiety, or for kids who are already comfortable in the chair but need a little something extra for a longer or more involved procedure. If your child has been here before and just needs help settling in, this is usually where we start.

If your child needs more support than nitrous alone can offer, we'll talk with you honestly about what the next step looks like. We never guess, and we never push further than your child actually needs.

What Happens at the Appointment

  1. We explain it in kid language first. Our team will show your child the mask, let them hold it if they want to, and describe it as "your special breathing air" or something similarly non-scary, never as "gas" or anything clinical-sounding.
  2. The mask goes on, and breathing does the rest. Your child breathes normally through the nose. Most kids start to feel relaxed within a few minutes.
  3. We monitor the whole time. Your child is never unsupervised while the mask is on.
  4. It wears off fast. After a few minutes of breathing regular oxygen, the effects clear quickly. There's no lingering grogginess.

Before and After

Before: No special prep is needed. Your child can eat and drink normally beforehand.

After: Your child can go back to their normal day right away, no waiting around for it to "wear off" the way you might with other sedation options, and no restrictions on food, school, or activity.

Questions Parents Often Ask

Will my child be asleep? No. Your child stays awake and aware the entire time. Nitrous oxide helps with anxiety, not consciousness.

Does it always work? Every child responds differently. For most kids, it helps a lot. For a smaller number, it's not quite enough on its own, and that's okay. If that's the case, we'll talk with you about what else might help.

Is it safe? Yes. It's one of the most well-established comfort tools in pediatric dentistry, and we monitor your child closely throughout.

Is there a recovery time? Yes. There's no recovery time needed. You can head straight home or back to your day.

Appointment Day Policies to Know

Parent/Caregiver Presence You're welcome to stay in the room with your child during nitrous oxide, as long as our Solea® laser isn't being used. If the laser is part of the visit, you can walk your child back and help them get settled, but once treatment begins, parents and guardians are asked to return to our waiting room so our team can give your child their full focus.

No Sibling Policy Siblings are not permitted in clinic treatment areas, with the exception of infants in carriers. We want your child to be our full focus during their appointment, and other siblings in the room can create distractions and safety concerns around our equipment. Our waiting room is set up to be a comfortable, engaging space for siblings, with books, a red lighthouse to explore, and soft stackable foam pieces while your child is in treatment. Any exceptions are made at the doctor's and staff's discretion, on a visit-by-visit basis, and must be arranged before the appointment.
